Nicotine vs Tobacco: Smoking, Chewing, Vaping, Snus and Addiction Explained

What is nicotine?

Nicotine is a natural alkaloid found in the leaves of the tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum. Chemically it is C10H14N2 (CAS 54-11-5), a colourless to pale yellow oily liquid that turns brown when exposed to air and light.

Nicotine is the reason people keep smoking, chewing or vaping. It is also one of the most searched substances online. People want to know whether nicotine is bad for you, how snus differs from a vape, and why quitting tobacco is so hard. This guide answers those questions in plain language.

Nicotine vs tobacco: what is the difference?

Tobacco is the plant; nicotine is one chemical inside it. Cured tobacco leaf usually contains about 1–3% nicotine, along with thousands of other compounds.

The difference matters for health. Nicotine causes addiction, but most of the disease linked to tobacco comes from the other substances. Burning tobacco produces tar, carbon monoxide and many known carcinogens. Unburnt tobacco, as in chewing tobacco, contains tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), which are linked to oral cancer.

That is why health agencies say nicotine is addictive and not harmless, but is not the main cause of tobacco-related cancer. It is also why medicinal nicotine, such as patches and gum, can be used to help people quit smoking.

Nicotine can also be made without tobacco. Synthetic nicotine is produced chemically in a lab. Tobacco-derived nicotine is extracted and purified from the leaf. At pharmaceutical grade (USP or EP), both must meet the same purity standard.

Smoke, chew, vape, snus or pouch: how nicotine is used

The biggest health difference between products is whether tobacco is burnt. Smoking is the most harmful way to take nicotine; medicinal nicotine is the least.

Product Contains tobacco? Burnt? How nicotine is absorbed Main health concern
Cigarettes, bidis, hookah Yes Yes Lungs, within seconds Cancer, heart and lung disease from smoke
Chewing tobacco (gutka, khaini, zarda) Yes No Lining of the mouth Oral cancer, gum disease
Snus Yes No Under the upper lip Addiction; lower but not zero cancer risk
Nicotine pouches (Zyn, Velo) No No Under the upper lip Addiction; long-term data still limited
Vapes / e-cigarettes No No, heated Lungs Addiction; long-term lung effects uncertain
Patches, gum, lozenges (NRT) No No Skin or mouth, slowly Low; designed to help people quit

Smoking

Cigarettes deliver nicotine to the brain within about 10 seconds, which is why smoking is so addictive. The smoke contains tar, carbon monoxide and dozens of carcinogens. According to the WHO, tobacco kills more than 8 million people worldwide every year.

Chewing tobacco

In India, smokeless tobacco such as gutka, khaini, zarda and mawa is more common than smoking. India’s Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2) found that about 28.6% of adults use tobacco in some form. Chewing tobacco is a leading cause of oral cancer in South Asia, and gutka sale is banned in most Indian states.

Vaping

A vape heats a liquid of propylene glycol, glycerine, flavourings and nicotine into an aerosol. There is no combustion, so a vape exposes users to far fewer toxicants than a cigarette. UK health authorities describe vaping as much less harmful than smoking, but not risk-free and not for non-smokers or young people. Note that India banned the sale, import and manufacture of e-cigarettes under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.

Snus

Snus is a moist, pasteurised tobacco powder in a small pouch, placed under the upper lip. It comes from Sweden, where it is legal and widely used. Pasteurisation keeps nitrosamine levels lower than in most chewing tobacco. Snus sale is banned in the rest of the European Union.

Nicotine pouches

Nicotine pouches look like snus but contain no tobacco leaf. They hold plant fibre, flavouring and nicotine, often high-purity or synthetic nicotine. Brands such as Zyn and Velo are among the fastest-growing nicotine products in the US and Europe.

Nicotine addiction: why tobacco is hard to quit

Nicotine is addictive because it triggers a release of dopamine in the brain’s reward system. Over time the brain adapts and needs nicotine to feel normal. Faster delivery, as with smoking, makes the habit stronger.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms

Withdrawal usually starts within a few hours of the last dose and peaks in the first three days. Common symptoms include:

Most physical symptoms ease within two to four weeks. Cravings triggered by habits, such as tea breaks or stress, can last longer.

How long does nicotine stay in your system?

Nicotine itself has a half-life of about two hours, so it leaves the blood within a day or so. The body breaks it down into cotinine, which lasts much longer. Cotinine is usually detectable in urine for around three to four days, and for longer in heavy daily users.

How to quit tobacco: nicotine replacement therapy

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) gives the body controlled, clean nicotine without tobacco smoke. That eases withdrawal while the person breaks the habit. NRT is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

Using a patch with a fast-acting form together works better than either alone. Pairing NRT with counselling improves quit rates further.

Where pharmaceutical-grade nicotine comes from

Every nicotine patch, gum, lozenge and regulated pouch starts with purified nicotine that must meet a pharmacopoeia standard. Under the USP monograph, that means an assay of 98.0–102.0%, water no more than 0.5%, and each related impurity (such as cotinine, nornicotine and anabasine) no more than 0.3%.

McCoy NIC International LLP has been in the tobacco trade since 1931. Today we supply pure nicotine 99.9%, tobacco-derived nicotine, synthetic nicotine, nicotine salts and pharmaceutical and NRT-grade nicotine to licensed manufacturers worldwide. Every batch ships with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and MSDS.

We supply business to business only, against verified end use and valid import permits. We do not sell to individuals or for consumer use.

Frequently asked questions

Is nicotine bad for you?

Nicotine is addictive and raises heart rate and blood pressure, and it is harmful during pregnancy and adolescence. It is not the main cause of cancer from tobacco; that comes mostly from smoke and tobacco toxins.

Is vaping safer than smoking?

For adult smokers who switch completely, vaping exposes them to far fewer toxicants than cigarettes. It is not risk-free, and non-smokers and young people should not vape.

What is the difference between snus and nicotine pouches?

Snus contains ground tobacco leaf. Nicotine pouches contain no tobacco, only nicotine, plant fibre and flavouring.

Is chewing tobacco safer than smoking?

No form of tobacco is safe. Chewing tobacco avoids smoke-related lung disease, but it strongly raises the risk of mouth, throat and oesophageal cancer.

How long does nicotine withdrawal last?

Physical symptoms peak in the first three days and mostly fade within two to four weeks. NRT and counselling make this period easier.

Is synthetic nicotine the same as tobacco nicotine?

The molecule is the same. Natural nicotine is almost entirely the (S)-form; synthetic nicotine can be made as pure (S)-nicotine or as a racemic mix. Pharmaceutical grades of both must meet the same USP or EP limits.
